Plotting

 So where was I ?

Ah yes I had everything all set up and was deciding what rules set I was to play the simulation with.

The first thing I wanted to set what the forces were told to do and how they were going to act.

Red Orders.  Horse to take hill and engage enemy approaching.  Foot A, B & C to seize town.

Blue orders.  Foot 3 and Gun to defend town.  Foot 1&2 with cavalry to take hill.

So with the basics set, I turned to Portable Wargame.  I’ve run so many shenanigans with this set that it was obviously my first port of call. What was interesting was the red victory had to come with a twist of fate. Whilst the  blues were stuck against one horse force the other peeled off to win on turn 7. This was a bit cheeky but I felt it was right to give it a chance considering the orders.

I gave the little encounter another run with the same  orders and order of battle with One Hour Wargame.  As usual this gave a really ambiguous result, in the fact that it could be argued that blue won by holding onto the town, but also can be argued that it was a draw as they didn’t capture both objectives.  What was interesting was that the red horse units could be pulled off there objective by careful manoeuvre by blue. If given more than 10 game bounds could blue have been victorious?

I also tried the famous shambattle esq approach but this I recall was a bit wishy washy, as the play through as quite quick and I confused myself with what’s was doing what.  I wanted to give Featherstone a whirl but simply writing the rosters up just bored me, it was just outside the time remit I have at the moment.

I then put pen to paper for some flash of inspiration I visualised whilst, of all things, in bed trying to get to sleep!
